Crop Harvest Waiting Periods after Biosolids Application in Washington

biosolids application washingtonBiosolids application for agricultural purposes can be extremely beneficial in Washington. While it’s considered a safer, eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers, farmers must become familiar with crop harvesting restrictions after biosolids have been applied. Waiting periods vary from crop to crop, but all regulations must be followed.

Above Ground Food Crops with No Contact

Crops grown above ground that don’t have direct contact with the biosolids materials can be harvested relatively quickly after biosolids application. These include cherries and wheat. In most cases, the waiting period is only 30 days.

Above Ground Food Crops with Contact

If the harvest part of the plant does have contact with the biosolids, however, the waiting period for harvesting is longer. Above ground crops like lettuce and cucumber must be harvested 14 months after biosolids application.

Root Food Crops

There are a number of common root food crops, including onions and potatoes. These vegetables do have direct contact with the biosolids material so the harvest waiting period is longer. A key factor is the length of time the biosolids remain on the soil surface. When this period is equal to or less than four months, the crops can be harvested after 20 months. If the material remains on the soil surface for more than four months, harvesting is allowed after 38 months.

Feed and Fiber Crops

Feed and fiber crops, such as range land, pasture, trees and cotton, have short waiting periods. These items can be harvested after only 30 days. Turf, on the other hand, requires a waiting period of one year.

Requirements for Biosolids Applied to Agricultural Land Sites in Washington

Requirements for Biosolids washingtonThe application of biosolids for agricultural purposes is permitted in Washington. In fact, as a safer, eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers, this process is particularly beneficial to the farming industry. Biosolids can replenish soil, increase crop yield and cause no groundwater pollution. It is important to realize, however, that companies with a permit to apply these materials to agricultural land sites must adhere to a number of important requirements for biosolids. Make sure the provider you choose follows the following guidelines:

Remove Manufactured Inerts

Before land application is possible, the biosolids must meet requirements for removal of manufactured inerts. At minimum, they must contain <1% by volume of recognizable manufactured inerts. Additionally, the material must be screened through a bar screen with a maximum 3/8 inch aperture. Other Ecology-approved equivalents are acceptable.

Test the Soil

New biosolids land application sites must be tested for pollutants before the process can begin. The material cannot exceed the ceiling concentration limits. Nutrient levels must also be examined prior to each application, even if the land has been approved previously.

Determine the Agronomic Rate

Biosolids have to be applied at an appropriate agronomical rate. This rate is determined by nutrient levels in the soil. The company that is providing the materials is responsible for determining this rate. Make sure this information is provided prior to scheduling biosolids transportation

Restrict Public Access

Additionally, public access to the area where biosolids are applied must be restricted. At minimum, the sites must be posted for as long as the areas are off limits. All exceptions must have prior approval from Ecology.

Requirements for Transporting Biosolids in Washington

Requirements for Transporting Biosolids WashingtonNot just anyone can transport biosolids in Washington. As a safer, eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers, biosolids are particularly valuable assets in the farming industry. They can replenish soil and increase crop yield without polluting nearby groundwater. Consequences for relocating this material incorrectly, however, can be significant. That’s why it’s so important to adhere to all state requirements for transporting biosolids. Always verify that these essential management requirements are being met when biosolids are moved from one location to another.

Legal Permit

The state regulates the storage, disposal, transportation and land application of biosolids. In order to participate in any of these activities, a state-issued permit is required. If you or the company you’re planning to hire does not have a permit, attempting to move these materials could lead to significant legal action and fines.

Properly Cleaned Transportation Vehicle

Vehicles used to transport biosolids are sometimes the same vehicles used to transport food crops, feed crops and fiber crops. This is acceptable, but only as long as the vehicle is properly cleaned beforehand.

Spill Prevention/Response Plan

Spill prevention and response plans are also necessary for biosolids transportation. Plans can be provided by either the sending or receiving entity and must include the following:

  • Main route traveled and possible alternate routes
  • Spill prevention measures
  • Equipment needed to respond appropriately to a spill carried on the vehicle
  • Spill response measures

Why Using Biosolids as Fertilizer is so Good for Crops in Washington

biosolids as fertilizerAs a farmer in Washington State, it’s important to utilize resources that promote the growth and success of your business. The more you do for your crops now, the higher yield you can expect in the future. To this end, many farmers opt to use treated biosolids as fertilizer. As a safer, eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers, biosolids may be the perfect solution. Consider the following benefits to your crop.

Improved Output

Without proper care, you could see a dramatic decline in productivity over the years as organic matter in the soil is depleted. Biosolids can, however, improve crop growth and yield. This is due to an abundance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as trace elements of other vital components.

Soil Replenishment

Global demands for produce can put a lot of strain on soil capacity. Fortunately, biosolids are able to help replenish organic matter, which will promote aeration, improve soil structure and enhance moisture storage. In fact, biosolids land application is often used to regenerate abandoned mine sites.

No Groundwater Pollution

Traditional chemical fertilizers can be dangerous for you, your customers and the environment. Biosolids, on the other hand, allow for the slow release of nitrogen and phosphorous throughout the growing season, so over-fertilization isn’t a concern.
